Andrew Jackson Jihad - People II 2: Still Peoplin’
I find that certain memories or events and whatnot have feelings attached to them. Not in the sense of happy/sad/angry/etc., but like the feeling you get when you smell the first day of spring. The sweet refreshing morning air that’s not too cold, but by no means warm yet. But more abstract than that. The essence of being in that time. It’s not a feeling that has a name and it’s difficult to realize you’re feeling it when you are. It’s a remembering feeling. And they are all different and quite distinguishable.
When I first got to college, Andrew Jackson Jihad had just put out Knife Man, and I was listening to it a lot. This song reminds me a lot of the beginning of college for me. I really didn’t know anyone, and I felt shy and antisocial. The smell of the dorm rooms, which eventually faded as we got used to it. The very high air humidity outside and the heat, despite it being mid-September. The feeling of change. Of pulling your roots up from the old used soil of home and planting yourself in the new and unknown. Watching the helicopters land on the hospital across the street as the sun sets and the beacon lights turn from white to red while the street lights up red with taillights. Of being told ‘you’re awkward, but I think it’s cute and funny.’
I suppose it’s some kind of abstract nostalgia. I’ve felt this kinda thing for as long as I can remember. I wonder if anyone else gets it too. I wonder if it makes any sense at all.
